Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 – Application Guide
OVERVIEW
Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 is a fast cure Epoxy Mastic with fast dry times. It is ideal for use in protecting steel and concrete in industrial applications. It is commonly used for maintenance and painting in fabrications shop applications. It can be applied to marginally prepped steel surfaces. Common applications include refineries, fab shops, chemical plants, water treatment plants and more.
PRODUCT DATA
Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 dries in approximately 2 hours to touch and 7 days to cure at 77°F100°F, dry time to touch becomes about 1 hour, to handle 4 and a half hours, and to cure 4 days.
Pot life for Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 at 77°F is 4 hours and 2 hours at a 100°F. What this means is that you need to be aware of the container size of material you use to ensure you use up the entire contents within the recommended pot life so that you won’t experience paint hardening in your equipment and to avoid causing issues with your equipment.
SURFACE PREPARATIONS FOR Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 APPLICATION:
Surfaces must be clean, dry and in good condition. They must be free of oil, grease, dirt, loose rust and other foreign contaminates.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM SURFACE PREPARATIONS
IRON and STEEL
Atmospheric surface application - SSPC-SP2 Standard/SSPC- SP 3 – this is known as hand tool or power tool cleaning where all loose mill scale is removed with a needle scaler or similar tool
Immersion surface application - SSPC-SP10 Standard; also known as a near-white metal blast profile.
STAINLESS STEEL
SSPC-SP16 standard, which is a brush off blast cleaning with a 1 mil (25 micron) profile.
ALUMINUM AND GALVANIZING
If the product has not been weathered prior to application for more than 6 months you can follow SSPC-SP1. It is also known as a solvent white preparation.
CONCRETE AND MASONRY
Atmospheric surface application - you can follow SSPC standard 13. This refers to concrete that has the right ph and is cured completely. More can be found here.
DUCTILE IRON PIPE
Atmospheric surface applications – needs to be prepped with power tool cleaning (SSPC-SP3)
Buried & Immersion application - blast cleaning is recommended.
APPLICATION EQUIPMENT
Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 can be applied by a nylon plaster blend or natural bristle brush. It can also be applied with a conventional spray gun and paint pressure pot with pressure cup as well as with an airless sprayer with a minimum of a 30:1 output ratio and that supports at least 017"-.023" (0.43-0.58 mm) tip. It can also be applied by roller with at least a 3/8" woven cover and a solvent resistant core. You may thin the product up to 10 percent for applications like paint pots.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® 646 is composed of two components and should be mixed by thoroughly at a low rpm with an air-powered mixer to ensure proper performance of the coating. Additionally MACROPOXY® is often combined with other coatings like Zinc and a urethane top coat. If using a Zinc rich primer it can be ideal to apply a mist coat prior to applying a full film thickness coating to reduce outgassing issues. More on Sherwin-Williams® MACROPOXY® can be found here.
