In this article, we’ll walk through the steps to properly apply Behr Advanced DeckOver® to ensure a flawless and long-lasting finish.

Behr Advanced DeckOver® is a high-quality resurfacer designed to rejuvenate weathered or cracked wood and concrete surfaces. It features an advanced formula that bridges cracks, covers splinters, and conceals imperfections, creating a smooth and durable surface. Moreover, it provides a slip-resistant finish, essential for an area exposed to moisture. DeckOver® isn’t recommended for driveable surfaces like garage floors and driveways.

• Painter’s tape

• Roller with an extended handle

• Nylon/polyester brush or ¼” to ½” nap roller cover

• Paint tray

• Pressure washer or hose

• Muriatic acid (for concrete surfaces)

• All in one Wood Cleaner for wood surfaces to remove mildew, dirt, oil, and grease as well as a chemical stripper to remove loose wood fibers or peeling coatings

• Broom or blower

• Protective gear (gloves, goggles, mask)

1. Assess and Clean the Surface

Inspect the deck for any loose screws, nails, or boards and repair as needed. Clean the surface using a pressure washer or a hose with a high-pressure nozzle to remove any loose paint, dirt, or mildew. If the wood is weathered, you may use an all-in-one wood cleaner for a thorough cleanse. For concrete surfaces ensure you don’t use the product on concrete that is structurally weak. Allow new concrete to cure at least 30 days before applying DeckOver®. Clean and etch the concrete surface with a product like muriatic acid to achieve a profile similar to a 150 grit sandpaper. At the end of the prep you should have a clean, dry surface free of any chipped or flaking paint.

2. Protect Surrounding Areas

Use painter’s tape to protect any areas like walls or railings that you don't want to be painted. This will ensure a clean finish and prevent unintended application.

3. Mix Behr Advanced DeckOver®

Before application, stir the Behr Advanced DeckOver® thoroughly to ensure the consistency is even. It’s thick, so make sure to mix it well. Additionally, ensure you mix the product occasionally throughout use to ensure it stays consistent in its mix.

5. Apply the First Coat

Pour the Behr Advanced DeckOver® into a paint tray. Using a roller with an extended handle, apply the first coat to the deck. Start at one end and work your way to the other, ensuring you maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Use a nylon/polyester brush to cut in around railings and in corners where the roller can’t reach. You may also use an airless sprayer that is properly sized for the product. You shouldn’t thin DeckOver®. For spraying if spraying a vertical surface apply a thin tack coat and then apply your standard coat for horizontal surfaces you can spray a complete coat at a time. Ideally DeckOver® should be applied when material, surface, and air temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

6. Second Coat

In most cases, a second coat is recommended for optimum durability. Wait for the first coat to dry (approximately 4-6 hours, but check the product label for specific instructions), and then apply the second coat in the same manner as the first.

7. Cleanup and Drying

Remove the painter’s tape while the paint is still wet to avoid peeling. Clean the tools with soap and water. Allow the surface to dry completely before moving furniture back and using the deck. This usually takes 72 hours, but it will depend on air temperature and humidity.

8. Inspect and Enjoy

After the surface is dry, inspect the deck for any missed spots or imperfections. Touch up as necessary. Now, your deck is rejuvenated and ready to enjoy for years to come.
