How to Choose the Right Clamps

Selecting the right clamp requires understanding your workpiece, the force you need to apply, and the environment where the clamp will work. Use this guide to narrow down your options.

• Opening Capacity and Throat Depth: These measurements determine what size workpiece your clamp can hold. Opening capacity tells you the maximum width between the clamp's jaws; throat depth is the distance from the screw spindle to the back of the clamp. Always verify both dimensions fit your application—a clamp with adequate opening might have insufficient throat depth for your needs.
• Duty Rating (Light, Regular, Heavy, Spark-Duty): Light-duty clamps are fine for gentle holding in woodworking or assembly tasks. Regular-duty clamps suit general machine shop work. Heavy-duty and drop-forged clamps handle sustained pressure, high-temperature welding, and forge work. Spark-duty clamps are specifically engineered to withstand the intense heat and spatter of arc welding without damage.
• Clamp Type (F-Clamp vs. C-Clamp): F-clamps (bar clamps) provide longer reach and are ideal for edge-to-edge work or holding larger assemblies. C-clamps offer compact, powerful clamping in confined spaces. Your workpiece geometry and available workspace often dictate which type works best.

Check material specifications if your workpiece is sensitive to corrosion or cosmetic damage.
• Screw Type and Ease of Use: Modern clamps feature smooth, fast-acting screws that reduce clamping time. Swivel pads can also reduce setup time and improve holding geometry on irregular surfaces.
