General industry integrated-rescue shock-absorbing lanyards attach a worker's safety harness to an anchor point on a building or structure to stop the worker from free-falling if he or she falls while working at heights. They are commonly used in the construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, and wind energy industries.

Integrated-rescue shock-absorbing lanyards can be used to raise or lower workers if they fall while working in a high place. They also dampen the jolt at the bottom of the fall to help reduce the risk of fall injuries. Shock-absorbing lanyards are typically lighter than self-retracting lifelines (SRLs).
