What makes a diaphragm pump "food grade"?
Food grade means every wetted part is made from an FDA-compliant material and the pump is built so it can actually be cleaned — smooth surface finish, drainable geometry and sanitary tri-clamp or DIN connections instead of threaded pipe. Graco designates these models FG in the part description.

Should I choose QUANTM electric or SaniForce air-operated?
QUANTM runs on an electric motor and is up to 80% more efficient than an air-operated pump, so it pays back fastest on lines that run continuously. SaniForce is air-operated: lower up-front cost, no electrical work, and simpler to repair in-house. If you already have plant air and run intermittently, SaniForce usually wins on total cost.

What flow rate do I need?
Fluid passage size sets the ceiling. Roughly: 1 in. up to about 40 gpm, 1.5 in. to about 80 gpm, 2 in. to about 120 gpm, and 3 in. above that. Viscous product derates those numbers significantly, so tell us the fluid and the target rate rather than sizing on flow alone.

Which diaphragm material suits food and beverage?
Santoprene is the general-purpose choice for most food, beverage and dairy product. PTFE and PTFE/Santoprene two-piece are used where you cannot risk flavour carryover between products, or where temperature is higher. FKM (Viton) suits oils and fats.

Is food grade the same as 3-A certified?
No. Food grade covers the materials and general hygienic construction. 3-A is a separate, audited sanitary standard that many dairy and higher-risk processors require. If your plant specifies 3-A, order from the 3-A models rather than assuming a food grade pump qualifies.
