Fixed-Ratio vs. Variable-Ratio Plural Systems
Plural component (2K) equipment meters resin and hardener separately and mixes them right before the gun, so nothing sits pre-mixed in a pot losing pot life. There are two ways a system holds that ratio:
- Fixed ratio — the pump set is sized for one specific ratio (WIWA Inject 2K holds 1:1 by hardware design; WIWA DUOMIX swaps pump cylinders to lock in any of 200+ fixed ratios). Simple, mechanical, hard to get wrong.
- Variable ratio — Wagner TwinControl doses electronically and can be dialed anywhere from 0.1:1 to 20:1 without changing hardware, with an off-ratio alarm that stops the gun if the mix drifts outside tolerance. Better fit for shops running more than one coating formulation through the same machine.
Choosing Between a Wagner TwinControl and a WIWA DUOMIX / Inject
Both product lines below are proven 2K plural systems, but they're built for different jobs:
- Wagner Liquid TwinControl — electronic 2K mixing and dosing, available AirCoat (up to 3,900 PSI) for finish work on trucks, rail cars, and wind turbine components, or straight Airless (up to 7,700 PSI) for heavy corrosion protection on structural steel and marine work. Real-time mixing accuracy display, pot-life monitoring, and automatic flushing come standard across the line.
- WIWA DUOMIX GX — piston-driven, up to 6,526 PSI, and rated for both 2K and 3K materials with pot times as short as 30 seconds — the DUOMIX 333 GX is one of the few systems that runs true 3K. Best for high-viscosity, solvent-free coatings and large-area work where a heated hose (up to 328 ft.) needs to reach the mixing head.
- WIWA Inject 2K — a compact, fixed 1:1 pneumatic piston pump built for injection resins rather than spray coatings: waterproofing, subsoil injection, sewer rehab, and curtain injection. Different job entirely from the spray systems above — filter by "Waterproofing & Injection Resins" below if that's your application.
Use the filters on this page to narrow by spray type, working pressure, mix ratio, and 2K vs. 3K — or just call 888-714-1410 and tell us the material and the job, and we'll spec the pump.
FAQ
What's the difference between AirCoat and Airless plural spray?
AirCoat uses a small amount of compressed air to help atomize the material at lower pump pressure (up to ~3,900 PSI on the Wagner line here) — it gives a finer finish for visible coatings. Airless pushes material through the tip at much higher pressure (up to 7,700 PSI) with no air assist, which is what heavy corrosion-protection and structural coatings usually call for.
Can one machine spray both 2K and 3K materials?
Most plural equipment is 2K-only. The WIWA DUOMIX 333 GX in this collection is the exception — it's built to run 2K or 3K coating materials on the same platform.
Do I need an Ex-rated (explosion-proof) unit?
If you're spraying solvent-based coatings, or working in a booth or confined space with a flammable-atmosphere classification, you need an ATEX/Ex-rated system — every Wagner TwinControl unit in this collection ships Ex-rated. Tell us your booth classification when you call and we'll confirm the right configuration.
What mixing ratio range do I actually need?
Check your coating manufacturer's data sheet for the resin:hardener ratio. Most industrial 2K primers and topcoats run somewhere between 1:1 and 4:1, well inside the Wagner TwinControl's 0.1:1–20:1 electronic range. If your material calls for a single fixed ratio and you'd rather not touch the settings, a WIWA DUOMIX configured to that exact ratio is the simpler machine.
