Wood, cabinet, and furniture lacquer

Wood lacquer (nitrocellulose, pre-cat, post-cat, conversion varnish) sprays best through a 1.3-1.5 mm tip with an HVLP gravity or siphon-fed gun. The medium-sized tip lets you push enough material through to build finish quickly on doors, cabinets, and large flat panels without runs, but atomizes fine enough for a smooth lay-down.

Automotive lacquer & clear coat

Automotive lacquer (mostly acrylic lacquer today) demands finer atomization than wood work — you're spraying thinner material at lower film build, and orange peel or mottling is unforgiving on a car panel. That means 1.0-1.3 mm tips, HVLP gravity feed, and premium fine-finish gun bodies.

High-production lacquer setups (pressure-fed)

Once you're spraying 6+ hours per day and refilling a gravity cup every 15 minutes stops making sense, move to a pressure-fed system: a 2-quart pressure cup or 2.8-gallon pressure pot feeds material to the gun via fluid line, so you keep spraying uninterrupted. The gun stays lighter (no full cup on it), fatigue drops, and consistency improves.

• 2-quart pressure cup outfits — portable, great for one-operator shops that want the pressure-fed benefits without the pot footprint.
• 2.8-gallon pressure pot outfits — for full production shifts; a single pot fill lasts most of a day.

Picking the right tip size

• 1.0 mm — automotive clear coat, high-end fine finish, thinned lacquer
• 1.2 mm — automotive base coat, fine wood finish, sealer coats
• 1.3-1.4 mm — general-purpose lacquer; the "if in doubt" tip for wood cabinet finishing
• 1.5-1.8 mm — high-build lacquers, stains, and primers; move up if you're getting runs from thicker material
