PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® – A HOW-TO APPLICATION GUIDE
PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® Benefits and Product Details
PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® is a water-borne acrylic coating that can be applied to a variety of surfaces and substrate from wood to vinyl to dry wall to ceramic tile and more. PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® is commonly used for wood projects ranging from doors and trim to cabinets. It quickly dries allowing you to complete projects that require multiple quotes of paint to ensured optimal outcomes in a short period of time.
PRODUCT DETAILS
Drying time to recoat is approximately 2 hours at 77°F (25°C) and can be fully cured within 7 days.
Additionally, it is a water-based coating so clean up can be done with warm soapy water.
PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® is also resilient to most household cleaners so it can be effectively used in home applications like wood trim and cabinets that will be frequently cleaned during daily use.
SURFACE PREPARATION BEFORE APPLYING PPG BREAK-THROUGH!®
Applying PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® effectively requires the surfaces you’re going to be coating to be clean, dry, free of grease, free of dirt, free of all contaminates and should not have any lose or peeling existing paint or rust.
While these are the standard requirements for all surfaces that you want to use PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® on, there are additional requirements for specific surfaces.
Please see below for more:
Aluminum – this can be a difficult surface for PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® to adhere to, so before using BREAK-THROUGH!® on aluminum, it is ideal to apply it to a test area, let it cure, and see if adhesion is strong. If PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® adheres well then you may continue to coat the entire project.
Ceramic tile – this does not require a primer but the surface must be roughened up by chemical etching or sanding to ensure good adhesion
Concrete/Masonry Block – must be cured at least 30 days but ideally 90 days and have a PH of less than 10 before it can be primed. Block and concrete must be primed with an Alkali resistant primer and then PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® can be used. It must also be free of any loose or chipping paint particles which can be achieved by proper sanding.
Ferrous Metal – must be free of dust and rust and needs to be primed with a metal primer but for interior applications a primer is not required.
Fiberglass – does not require primer but sanding is recommended. Due to potential adhesion challenges, fiberglass should be coated and allowed to dry overnight on a test area to ensure that BREAK-THROUGH!® is able to achieve good adhesion.
Galvanized steel – Galvanized steel has protective coatings already on it to prevent rust and so it can be difficult to coat with PPG BREAK-THROUGH!®. The existing protective coating must be removed by blasting, sanding or chemical treatment before you can consider using BREAK-THROUGH!®
Drywall – is a smooth, even surface and so should be prepped by proper sanding. After sanding, all dust that is on the surface must be removed, at which point you can use primer and then PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® to coat the surface.
Interior wood - wood needs to be sanded and wiped to clean of all dust, the wood surface should also be degreased. Ideally a primer should be used before PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® can be applied.
Laminate - no primer is needed but you should sand and roughen the surface, so PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® has a good profile to adhere to.
Plaster - needs to be cured for at least 30 days prior. Surface should be primed with an Alkali resistant primer.
Vinyl and Plastics - are not easily coated with PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® so a area should be test coated and allowed to dry. Adhesion should be evaluated to ensure BREAK-THROUGH!® will have enough of a bond with the surface prior to it being used on an entire project.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICATION:
When applying PPG BREAK-THROUGH!®, air temperature should be between 50°F (10°C) and 90°F (32°C) and should be maintained at 50°F (10°C) and 90°F (32°C) during the entire drying time of the product. PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® is not recommended for outdoor surfaces or horizontal surfaces unless they can be kept dry for 7 days.
APPLICATION EQUIPMENT
PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® can be applied via a brush, roller, airless sprayer or HVLP.
If you want to brush PPG BREAK-THROUGH!®, a polyester, nylon, blend brush is ideal. While for rolling, a 3/16” - 3/8” nap roller cover is recommended. If you prefer to spray PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® you can use an airless sprayer and use approximately 1500 to 2000 PSI spray pressure. For wood projects, a fine finish low pressure style tip can help you get the smoothest finishes and keep over spray down. When spraying airless, PPG BREAK-THROUGH!® will typically not need thinned at all. For HVLP, a 4 stage or higher stage turbine would be recommended using a 1.8 size tip and depending on your finish goal, may require slight thinning between 5 to 10% to ensure a smooth finish.
