Gas powered paint sprayer sizing starts with flow rate (GPM). Underpower a job and you'll fight it all day. Overpower it and you're overpaying for capacity you'll never use. Here's how the classes work in the real world:

Graco vs. Titan — which brand?

Both build excellent gas powered paint sprayers. Choose based on which features matter to your operation:

• Graco GMAX / DutyMax / GH — the industry default. Widest dealer network for parts, longest track record for durability. GMAX II series has Graco's Endurance pump, considered the reference standard for airless. Big Rig 833/933 are the go-to for elastomeric contractors. Slightly higher initial cost, best resale value.

For most buyers, the engine brand won't materially affect your buying decision — pick the sprayer that matches your application, and take whatever engine comes with it. Just remember: change oil every 20-25 hours, keep a fresh spark plug in the truck, and the engine will outlast the pump.

PSI (pressure) drives atomization quality and material compatibility. Match PSI class to your typical material:

• 3,300 PSI — the standard for latex, water-based, thin oil-based coatings. Covers 90% of residential and commercial applications.
• 4,000-4,500 PSI — needed for heavier body coatings, mastic, some elastomerics.
• 6,000-7,250 PSI — required for high-solids protective coatings, epoxies, urethanes, thick industrial primers, and cold-weather elastomeric.

FAQ — Gas Powered Paint Sprayers

Is a gas powered paint sprayer better than electric for exterior work?
Gas wins any time you're more than a drop-cord away from power — new construction, remote residential exteriors, commercial roofs, industrial yards. Electric wins when you have reliable power and want quieter operation. For a mixed-work contractor, most owners eventually own one of each: a Graco Pro Contractor electric for interior/detail work, plus a gas machine for exteriors.

What's the difference between a mechanical drive and a hydraulic drive gas sprayer?
Mechanical drives (Graco GMAX II) use a direct-drive linkage from the engine to the pump — simpler, cheaper, plenty for latex and light coatings. Hydraulic drives (Graco DutyMax, Big Rig, Titan Hydra) drive the pump with hydraulic fluid — smoother pulse, longer pump life, better with high-viscosity materials, but more complex and $5-15K more. Hydraulic is required for elastomeric and protective coatings.

How much maintenance does a gas paint sprayer need?
Engine: oil change every 20-25 running hours, air filter every 50 hours, spark plug annually. Pump: fluid section rebuild every 500-800 hours depending on material (elastomeric wears faster than latex), packings every 200-300 hours. Budget 4-6 hours of maintenance per 500 hours of spraying. Doing this on schedule doubles the life of the machine.

Can I run any spray tip on any gas sprayer?
Match tip size to your GPM. A 517 tip flows about 0.31 GPM; a 619 flows about 0.55 GPM. Your sprayer needs at least the flow rating of your tip, plus 20% headroom. Overtipping (running a bigger tip than your sprayer can feed) causes tails and lousy fan pattern.

Do I need Honda or Kohler? Which starts easier in cold?
Honda GX and Kohler Command are functionally equivalent for reliability. Kohler has a slight edge on cold starts (some contractors in the north swear by it), Honda has the wider service network. If your primary market is cold-weather work, Kohler is worth asking for. Otherwise take whatever the sprayer ships with.
