Paint Booth Light Buying Guide
Light Type: LED vs. Fluorescent (T8 / T5)
LED fixtures use 40-60% less energy than T8 fluorescents, last 3-5× longer (50,000+ hours), start instantly at cold temperatures, and produce no UV that can react with certain coatings. Higher up-front cost but lower total cost of ownership over a 5-year window. Best choice for new installations and any booth where the lights run 8+ hours/day.
T8 fluorescent fixtures remain the standard for existing booths — lower initial cost, well-understood installation, easy tube replacement. T8 4-foot 32W tubes are the most common. T5 HO (54W) tubes deliver higher lumens per fixture and are found in high-bay applications.
Hazardous Location Rating: Class I vs. Class II
Class I Division 1 (explosion-proof) — required inside spray booths where flammable vapors are normally present. NEC-rated for continuous exposure to solvent atmospheres. Look for our GFS Explosion-Proof Lighting fixtures.
Class I Division 2 — for locations where flammable vapors are only present under abnormal conditions (e.g., adjacent to booth). Less expensive than Div 1, still safe for many booth-perimeter installations.
Class II Division 2 — for combustible-dust environments (blast booths, powder-coat booths). Sealed against dust ingress. Our LABW-C2D2 fixtures are certified for these environments.
Ordinary Location (Standard) — for booth exteriors, warehouse installations, and any location without a specific hazardous-location classification. Most of our stock falls in this category.
Fixture Configuration: 2, 4, or 6 Tubes
2-tube fixtures — 4-foot units for small booths, entry doors, or supplemental lighting. 6,000-8,000 lumens per fixture.
4-tube fixtures — most common for standard 8×8×14-foot booths, delivering 12,000-16,000 lumens per fixture. Typically 3-4 fixtures per side + ceiling.
6-tube fixtures — high-output units for large industrial booths, ADA-compliant color-matching areas, and automotive refinish shops. 18,000-24,000 lumens per fixture.
Single-Skin vs. Dual-Skin Housing
Single-skin is the most common — a single glass panel between tubes and the booth interior, easier to clean, lower cost. Best for occasional-use booths.
Dual-skin houses tubes between two glass panels with an air gap, running cooler and staying cleaner longer. Preferred for high-utilization booths and any booth where fixtures are hard to access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I retrofit my existing T8 fluorescent booth with LED tubes?
Yes — our GFS T8 LED tubes are direct-fit replacements for standard 4-foot 32W T8 fixtures. In most cases you bypass the ballast (direct-wire) or leave it in place depending on the tube type. If your booth is older than ~2005, verify ballast compatibility before ordering.
Do I need explosion-proof fixtures for a paint booth?
Yes — any fixture INSIDE the booth interior (where flammable solvent vapors are present during spraying) must be Class I Division 1 rated. Fixtures on the booth exterior or in the plenum/access areas often qualify as Class I Division 2. Consult your local NFPA 33 compliance requirements and your booth manufacturer's spec sheet if unsure.
How many fixtures do I need for my booth?
Industry rule of thumb: 200 foot-candles at the work surface. For a standard 14-foot-long booth, that typically works out to 3-4 fixtures per side wall + 2-3 on the ceiling. Add a corner fixture (GFS LAC12 series) at each corner for uniform coverage. GFS booth spec sheets list exact fixture counts by booth model.
What's the difference between GFS and LDPi fixtures?
Both are top-tier manufacturers. GFS fixtures are the standard fit for GFS-brand booths — the LABW / LAR / LAC series match GFS mounting patterns exactly. LDPi makes the widest range of LED options (Slim LED, LE485E wide/narrow, LE180) plus specialty fixtures for wet/damp locations. Both carry full manufacturer warranties.
Are the bulbs included?
Most complete fixtures ship with bulbs installed. A few specialty fixtures (marked with "Bulbs NOT Included" in the title) ship as housings only — order our GFS 230-281 replacement tube 30-pack separately.
Do you offer installation?
No — we ship the fixtures. Installation is straightforward for a licensed electrician (all fixtures are pre-wired for 120/277V). If you need install guidance, our tech team walks you through it at 888-714-1410.
