How to pick the right belt grinder

1. Belt size dictates what you can grind. Longer belts stay cooler and last longer under continuous load. Wider belts remove more material per pass.

Frequently asked questions

What size belt grinder should I get for knife making?
2"×72" is the industry standard for serious knife makers — long enough for hollow grinds on 8-10" blades, wide enough for full flats. If you're just starting out or making paring knives, 2"×42" is fine and half the price. Skip 2"×48" for pure knife work — it's a general-purpose size, not optimal for either flats or hollows.

Is a variable-speed belt grinder worth the extra cost?
For knife making, yes — fixed-speed models run too fast for the final grinding passes on hardened steel, causing bluing (overheat damage) that ruins the temper. For general fab work or deburring, single-speed is fine and $500-1000 cheaper.

What's the difference between a 2-wheel and 3-wheel belt grinder?
2-wheel is a straight belt path from drive wheel to idler — simple, cheap, best for flat grinding. 3-wheel adds a work-support wheel above the platen — better belt tracking on curved workpieces, easier to swap belts. Neither is objectively "better"; pick by workpiece shape.

Do I need a square wheel or small-wheel attachment?
Only if you're doing knife-making with hollow grinds or working choils/ricassos. The square wheel gives you a tighter radius (smaller diameter than a normal contact wheel) for grinding INTO the workpiece. Jet's SWG-272 makes this its whole design.

What belt speed do I need?
Fast (~4000-5000 SFPM) for steel removal, medium (~2000-3000 SFPM) for shaping and profiling, slow (~500-1500 SFPM) for finishing hardened blades without bluing. Variable-speed grinders cover all three; fixed-speed models are always at the fast end.

How much horsepower do I need?
For 2"×42" and 2"×48" belts, 1-1.5 HP is plenty. 2"×72" and 3"×79" want 2-3 HP for full duty cycle. 6"×79" needs 3+ HP. Under-HP grinders bog down under continuous load and burn belts faster.

Can I use a wood belt sander for knife making?
Not really — wood belt sanders run too fast (over 5000 SFPM) and have no variable-speed control, so hardened steel blues immediately. Metal belt grinders are purpose-built for tool-steel work.
