Choosing Your Fiberglass or Gel Coat Spray Gun

Binks 2100 GW Plural Component

The Binks 2100 GW is a plural-component, conventional-atomization spray gun for shops doing lower-volume gel coat or resin work off a pressure pot. Internal mix (catalyst blends inside the gun) so you can visually confirm clean atomization. Best fit: small mold shops, repair work, prototype production.

Binks Century LEL, Century for FRP, Century Vinyl Ester

The Binks Century family runs external mix at low emission levels (LEL) — less overspray onto the mold and less catalyst into the air. The Century LEL for Gel Coat, Resin & FRP is the multi-material pick; the Century Spray Gun for FRP, Gel Coat, Wet-Out, Resins & Vinyl Ester is the standard conventional option; the Century Vinyl Ester is spec'd for corrosion-resistant vinyl ester resins.

Binks Trophy 2.2mm HVLP for Gel Coat

If you're pushing gel coat through a pressure pot and want a large-tip HVLP with less overspray than conventional, the Binks 2465-22HV-31SO Trophy HVLP 2.2mm pairs a big fluid nozzle with the Trophy platform's HVLP compliance — lower velocity, less rebound, still enough material delivery for gel coat's higher viscosity.

Graco RS Internal Mix vs External Mix Gel Coat Guns

Graco's RS platform is air-assist airless — better atomization and higher transfer efficiency than conventional. The RS Internal Mix Gel Coat Gun quiets down catalyst fumes but demands prompt flushing at end-of-shift; the RS External Mix Gel Coat Gun lets you see the catalyst stream and forgives late flushing but you'll smell more.

Graco RS Chop Guns — Internal, External, High-Flow

PSE stocks all five Graco RS chop-gun configurations: Internal Mix and External Mix without cutter, Internal Mix with cutter and External Mix with cutter, plus the Internal Mix High-Flow for shops moving more chopped glass per minute. Air-assist airless atomization on all five. Match the gun to your existing Graco FRP RS pump.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a gel coat gun be used for resin?
Yes — a gel coat gun sprays resin fine, you just need a bigger fluid tip. Resin is much thinner (more like liquified honey) than gel coat (thicker, closer to latex paint), and often needs a larger orifice — 0.052" is common for resin vs 0.021" for gel coat. Some resin-only guns are set up slightly differently to deliver more material since you spray more resin than gel coat, but the same gun body can do both jobs with the right tip.

Internal mix vs external mix — which do I want?
Internal mix (catalyst blends inside the gun) means less catalyst smell in the booth, but if your operator doesn't flush quickly at end-of-shift the gun sets up internally — you need a reliable employee. External mix (catalyst injects at the tip) is more forgiving on flushing and lets you visually confirm catalyst is dispensing, but there's more catalyst in the air. External mix has less of a learning curve — pick it if your operators are newer.

LEL vs Air-Assist Airless vs Conventional — which for gel coat?
LEL (Low Emission Level) reduces overspray and is fine for boat exteriors. Air-Assist Airless (Graco RS) gets you the best atomization for molds and finish-critical parts. Conventional (Binks 2100 GW, Binks Century Vinyl Ester) is simpler and cheaper but transfer efficiency is lower — more material lost to overspray, more cleanup.

Do I need a wet-out gun if I have a chopper gun?
Usually yes. Chopper guns lay down chopped strand with resin, but most of your resin volume goes into wetting out mat and cloth by hand after the chop — that job wants a wet-out gun (essentially a resin-only gun). Chopping is often just the first layer; the buildup is hand-laid mat wet out with a wet-out gun. And unlike a chopper (one dedicated operator), a wet-out gun can be used by anyone in the shop.

Which tip size do I need?
For gel coat, expect a 0.021" (21 thousandths) tip as a starting point — small tip because gel coat only lays down 18-21 mils. For resin, jump to 0.052" (52 thousandths) — you're putting down thicker layers to wet out fabric. Boat, bathtub, and truck-cap builders each spec differently — call 888-714-1410 and we'll match a tip to your product.
