Choosing a grinding wheel

Type 27 depressed-center wheels are the standard for weld grinding and bevelling with an angle grinder. Type 28 saucer wheels give better access to fillet welds and corners. Flexible blending discs grind and finish in one step with less gouging. Bench and straight wheels mount on pedestal and bench grinders, and cones and plugs thread onto air or electric grinders for inside corners and castings.

Should I choose aluminum oxide or zirconia grinding wheels?
Aluminum oxide is the economical all-round grain for steel. Zirconia alumina is tougher and self-sharpening, so it removes stock faster and lasts longer on heavy weld grinding and stainless. Silicon carbide is for concrete, stone and cast iron.

What is the difference between a 1/8 inch and a 1/4 inch grinding wheel?
A 1/8 inch wheel is lighter and better for light grinding and blending. A 1/4 inch wheel carries more abrasive, handles heavy side pressure on welds and lasts longer per wheel.

Can I use a cut-off wheel for grinding?
No. Cut-off wheels are thin and are designed for edge loading only; side grinding can break them. Use a grinding wheel or a combination cut and grind wheel rated for side use.

How do I pick a bench grinder wheel?
Match the wheel diameter, width and arbor hole to the grinder, then pick the grit: 24 to 36 grit for heavy stock removal, 46 to 60 grit for general sharpening and 80 grit for a finer edge.
