Choosing a nozzle size and air cap

The W-400 comes in six nozzle orifice sizes, and each size pairs with a specific Iwata air cap set:

• 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6 mm: LV2 air cap set (93830611)
• 1.8 mm: LV1 air cap set (93859611)
• 2.5 mm: W1 air cap set (93813611)

Nozzle + needle sets by orifice: 1.2 mm 93891610, 1.3 mm 93881610, 1.4 mm 93831610, 1.6 mm 93832610, 1.8 mm 93821610, 2.5 mm 93819610. Complete guns are listed by orifice and cup: gun only, or with a PCG6PM (600 ml), PCG7EM (700 ml) or PCG10EM (1000 ml) cup. Iwata's guidance is to keep fluid output as low as the job allows for finer atomization.

Finding the right replacement part

Open Iwata's W-400 spare parts list and find the part on the exploded diagram by its Ref. number (for example, 5 is the air valve seat set, 14 is the trigger and 17 is the 60 mesh filter). Then match the Ref. code printed beside it, such as 93515500 for the filter, to the code on the product listing. For fluid nozzles, fluid needles and air caps, Iwata says to give the gun model and the marked number on the part when ordering. Iwata also notes that the 5650 Repair Service Kit covers Ref. 4, 7-1, 9, 11, 15 and 17, and that the 2950 MK5 Maintenance Kit is available.

FAQ

What air pressure does the Iwata W-400 use?
Iwata suggests 2.0 to 3.0 bar (28 to 43 psi) at the gun inlet with the trigger pulled. The maximum working pressure is 6.8 bar (98 psi).

Which air cap goes with which W-400 nozzle size?
The LV2 cap goes with the 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6 mm nozzles. The LV1 goes with 1.8 mm and the W1 with 2.5 mm.

What cups and connections does the W-400 use?
Iwata lists the PCG6PM (600 ml), PCG7EM (700 ml) and PCG10EM (1000 ml) cups. The air nipple is G1/4" and the fluid nipple is M16 x 1.5.

My W-400 spits or has a distorted pattern. What should I check?
Iwata's troubleshooting guide points to paint buildup in the air cap, a dirty or damaged fluid nozzle seat, or a nozzle and needle set that is not seated properly. Its fixes are to clean the air cap, clean or replace the nozzle and needle set, and tighten the needle packing. Use only non-metal tools to clear the air cap horn holes. Iwata also cautions against using non-original parts in place of ANEST IWATA spare parts.
