Fire rating tier — non-combustible, 2-hour, or 4-hour

Fire rating is how long the outdoor storage locker's walls maintain internal temperature under fire exposure. Your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) determines the rating your site requires, typically based on distance to occupied structures and property lines.

• Non-Combustible (Justrite 911-series) — 12-gauge steel, no thermal insulation. Meets basic outdoor storage code where AHJ doesn't specify a rating. Cheapest tier, lightest to install. Best when the locker sits ≥50 ft from any building and no Class IA/IB liquids are stored.
• 2-Hour Fire-Rated (Justrite 912-series) — mineral-wool insulated walls hold internal temperature under ASTM E-119 fire exposure for 2 hours. Meets most municipal fire codes when locker is 20-50 ft from a building. The most-ordered tier.
• 4-Hour Fire-Rated (Justrite 913-series) — maximum protection. Required by some AHJs when the locker must sit within 30 ft of an occupied structure, or when storing large quantities of Class IA flammables. Adds ~$5-10K over 2-hour but often mandatory for permit approval.

Do you need Explosion Relief Panels?

If you're storing Class IA or IB flammables (gasoline, methanol, ethanol, most acetones and MEK grades — flash point < 73°F), NFPA 68 requires explosion relief panels on the storage locker. The panels are pre-scored steel plates that blow outward under sudden pressure spikes, relieving a deflagration event before it ruptures the locker structure.

Justrite SKU convention: the trailing "-1" on an SKU indicates explosion relief. So 912121 = 12-drum, 2-hour rated, WITH explosion relief. 912120 = same locker without relief panels. If your AHJ requires them, they're not optional — don't try to save the ~$3-5K difference on this one.

Site preparation checklist

• Concrete pad — 6" reinforced pad sized to the locker footprint + 12" perimeter. Justrite provides anchor point drawings.
• Anchor kit — Justrite includes stainless anchor hardware; concrete anchors are your responsibility (typically 3/4" epoxy anchors, ~$50 total).
• Grounding — outdoor storage lockers holding Class IA/IB liquids require a static grounding rod bonded to the locker frame. Coordinate with your electrician.
• Setback — check with your fire marshal for required distance from property lines, occupied structures, and public ways. Setback drives your fire rating requirement.

FAQ — Outdoor Storage Lockers

How do I know if I need an outdoor storage locker instead of an indoor cabinet?
Indoor cabinets are limited by NFPA-30 to 60 gallons per cabinet and a total of 240 gallons per storage area. If your inventory exceeds those limits, or your fire marshal requires outdoor storage for a particular chemical, you need an outdoor locker. Also, indoor cabinets can't handle 55-gallon drums for vertical storage — that requires an outdoor drum locker.

What's the difference between 2-hour and 4-hour fire-rated outdoor lockers?
Both use mineral-wool insulation in the walls. The 2-hour (Justrite 912-series) is rated for 120 min of ASTM E-119 fire exposure. The 4-hour (913-series) is rated for 240 min. Rule of thumb: 4-hour is required by AHJ when the locker is within 30 ft of an occupied building or when storing >1,000 gallons of Class IA flammables. Confirm with your fire marshal before ordering.

Can I install an outdoor storage locker myself, or do I need a crew?
2-drum and 4-drum lockers can typically be delivered on a lowboy and offloaded with a forklift you already have. 6-drum and larger require a crane and a rigging crew — Justrite offers installation coordination in most US regions, or your local heavy equipment installer can handle it. Budget ~$1,500-$3,500 for professional install on 6+ drum units.

Do outdoor storage lockers ship assembled?
Non-combustible 911-series lockers ship fully welded. Fire-rated 912 and 913 lockers ship assembled up to 6-drum capacity; 9-drum and larger ship in 2-4 sections that are bolted together on your concrete pad. Justrite provides the field assembly kit and instructions.

What's the lead time on outdoor storage lockers?

Do outdoor storage lockers need to be grounded?
Yes if you're storing Class IA or IB liquids (flash point < 100°F). A static-dissipation ground rod is required per NFPA-77.
