Best Lacquer Paint Sprayers 2023
As a cabinet finisher, a smooth lacquer coat can make the difference between a top-quality finish and a mediocre cabinet paint job. While the lacquer product you work with and your skill with a sprayer will be a big part of what will determine your results, having the right lacquer paint sprayer will also impact your cabinet finishing results. Having the right sprayer for laying down lacquer can help you achieve smooth flawless atomization and finish. This guide will provide some of our favorite lacquer sprayers of 2023 that will help you get the results you want.
Two Different Options for Spraying Lacquer
Airless/ Air-Assisted Airless or HVLP
Before we get into specific suggestions, it's important to briefly consider whether you want to go with an HVLP or Airless/ Air-Assisted Airless Sprayer. HVLP will provide the most control when you’re spraying and the greatest potential for a smooth finish. However, HVLP can also require you to adjust your paint to be able to spray well; this can mean light thinning of the paint, choosing an ideal tip size, and other details like we cover in our spray training here. Airless paint sprayers allow you to easily spray lacquer and achieve similar results to HVLP but you don’t get the same level of control. Additionally, airless sprayers can require more effort to clean up. However, when it comes to getting a smooth finish, an airless sprayer with a fine finish airless tip will get results without a lot of painting knowledge, making it our favorite option for those who are not or do not want to be professional cabinet painters. Air-assisted airless is similar to airless but will provide an HVLP like finish when spraying lacquer and is also expensive, making it ideal for the professional who wants speed, control, and ultimate finish quality. So, now that we have that out of the way, we can get on with recommendations for the best Lacquer Paint Sprayers.
Best Lacquer Paint Sprayers for Beginners and Small Projects
If you have a one-time project that you need to tackle or you just want to get started spraying lacquers as a cabinet finisher, the following models provide a lot of performance at a great price.
Wagner Control PRO 130 Airless Sprayer
With a small hopper design, the Control Pro 130 allows easy spraying of lacquer without having to deal with a lot of clean-up. It also comes with an HEA tip which does a fairly good job atomizing lacquers. This unit is also often available at retail stores making it a good option for a Saturday cabinet repaint project.
Graco Ultramax Handheld Airless Sprayer
The Graco Ultramax Handheld Airless Sprayer is a great choice for small projects. Since it uses a Dewalt battery, it is portable and easy to work with. The disposable cup system allows for quick clean-up. However, since it is a handheld and smaller sprayer, it is not meant for large volumes of spraying. It also includes two Fine Finish Low-Pressure Tips, which provide an excellent lacquer finish. The Ultramax model is safe for solvent-based products like lacquer while the Ultra model is not. If you are only spraying water-based lacquers, you could consider the Ultra model.
Earlex SprayStation 5500
The Earlex Spray Station 5500 is an HVLP sprayer that is suitable for spraying lacquer. With its lower turbine stages, it can do the job but won’t have the same power as a high-stage HVLP.
FUJI Semi-Pro 2 HVLP Turbine
The Semi-Pro 2 is an additional HVLP Turbine style sprayer. Coming with a 1.3 tip included it comes with the right tip size to spray lacquer. The kit also includes a cup that allows easy measurement of how thick your lacquer product is so you can ensure you get a good spray.
Best Mid and Professional Level Lacquer Sprayers
For those who want something a step up from a small project or beginner lacquer sprayer, this level of lacquer sprayers will provide you great performance and allow for higher volumes of lacquer spraying.
Mid-Level Lacquer Sprayers
Titan ED655
The Titan ED655 comes with a built-in hopper to help make cleanup easy and quick for small projects. The maximum pressure of the ED655 is 2700 psi which is suitable for thinner paints like lacquers and cabinet enamels. The ED655 gun comes with a synergy fine finish tip which is well suited for lacquer finishes. The ED655 is designed to spray 50-65 gallons per week, making it a great option for mid to professional level lacquer spraying.
Graco GX 19
The Graco GX 19 is a hopper-fed airless sprayer that sprays up to 3300 PSI. It also includes the Graco FFLP tip which is a fine finish tip that is well designed for lacquers. With pressure up to 3300 PSI, the GX 19 can also be used for small interior wall painting projects, though the hopper will provide some limits on how much space you can spray.
Tritech T4 Fine Finish Sprayer
Tritech manufactures highly machined paint sprayers that tend to be ahead of the competition in machine quality. They also offer extra hardened fine finish tips that are known to out atomize other fine finish tips. The fine finish setup comes with the pump and hopper all ready to go.
Fuji Mini Mite 3 or Mini Mite 4
The Fuji Mini-Mite Series provides HVLP finishing with higher turbine stages at an affordable price. These are a great choice if you’re looking for professional-level HVLP power on a budget. The only downside to the Mini-Mite is that heat is created as the HVLP is used, which can create changes in how your lacquer sprays. If you want a similar HVLP without the heat, you can consider the Q3 or Q4 Fuji.
Mid to Professional Level Lacquer Sprayers
Graco 395 / 595 Finish Pro Air Assist Airless Sprayer
The Graco Finishpro Air-Assisted Airless Sprayers offers the ultimate atomization with air-assisted airless finishing in a portable format that can be transported between job sites. Although air-assisted airless costs more than airless, it helps provide superior finishes.
Titan 440 Multifinish Air-Assisted Airless Sprayer
Similar to the Finishpro series, this is a portable Air-Assisted airless paint sprayer delivering superior atomization but also the convenience of being portable.
Fuji Q4 and Q5
The Fuji Q4 and Q5 HVLP Turbines offer great atomization with a 4 or 5 stage turbine. They also run quieter than other turbines on the market, making them ideal for a job site where you can’t have noise. The box also includes heat dissipation which prevents excessive heat buildup while spraying. The tip that is included with the typical kits allows for lacquer spraying; other tips must be bought separately.
Graco 9.5 Pro Contractor
The Graco 9.5 Pro Contractor comes with 3 tips included. Additionally, the turbine turns off if the spray gun is not being used (so the unit won’t build up heat). The 9.5 Pro Contractor provides 5 Stage Atomization and convenient tip storage built-in
Titan Capspray 115
Titan offers one of the only 6 Stage HVLP turbines on the market. The Capspray 115 comes with a 2- quart pressure pot as well which allows for pressure feeding. It also has a switch that reduces the turbine's output so that you can better control overspray. The 115 also comes with multiple tips giving you flexibility for a variety of cabinet finishes from latexes to lacquers.
Professional Lacquer Sprayers that Require an Air Compressor
If you have a shop and have a dedicated compressor, these sprayers can deliver top-quality results.
Binks Trophy Series Pressure Pot or Gravity Fed Spray Gun
The Binks Trophy Spray Gun comes in a gravity or pressure-fed option. For ultimate control, pressure fed spray guns allow for the best control and performance and gravity feed is easier to clean up. The LVMP air cap is ideal for the smoothest atomization with the Binks Trophy Series.
Graco Merkur Air-Assisted Airless Outfit
For higher volume and great atomization, the Graco Merkur is a compressed air-powered air-assisted airless outfit. It is available in a variety of different pump ratios. For lacquer, a 23:1 or higher is ideal to provide enough power to atomize the lacquer well. The higher volume output of a Merkur compared to an electric pump allows it to hold up better to heavy use; however, it is not portable like a Finishpro is.
To maximize results, you can also include the fine finish flat tip or twist tip to provide superior atomization (using both air-assisted airless and a fine finish tip).
CA Technologies Bobcat Air-Assisted Airless
CA technologies offer air-assisted airless spraying at a fair price. Compared to other options, it is usually easier on the wallet but still provides top-quality air-assisted airless spraying.
